Former Premier League defender Micah Richards believes it is “necessary” for Liverpool to hand Mo Salah a new contract with the club.

The Egyptian scored his seventh goal of the Premier League season against Brighton on Saturday, surpassing Robbie Fowler to become the eighth top scorer in the competition’s history.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Richards said: “There has been talk about contracts and whether he is going to renew or not – they have to sign him.

“It is absolutely necessary to give him a two-year contract at the end of the season. He will be 33 in the summer, then he will be 35.”

“He doesn’t have to play well to score big goals and have big moments. That’s the difference between a very good player and a top player.”
